The first of a series looking into my fantasy novels
Welcome to Grey & Write
New! Check me out on Bluesky Social!
Hello there, fellow fantasy lovers! I’m Edward Patrick, the creator behind the world of Grey & White, and I am beyond excited to welcome you to this journey. Whether you’ve stumbled upon this blog by chance or have found me on social media or whatever / wherever, I’m thrilled to have you here as I pull back the curtain on the world I’ve been building and the story I’m telling!
But first, a little about me! I fell in love with fantasy back in 2001, when I first discovered Final Fantasy IX and The Lord of the Rings. That was the spark that ignited my passion, and from there, my love for fantasy only grew. Stories that transport you to new worlds full of magic, intrigue, and unforgettable characters have always captivated me.
Over the years, I’ve been deeply inspired by authors like Robin Hobb, whose Realm of the Elderlings series brought rich character depth to the forefront of epic fantasy, and George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, which taught me the value of complex, morally grey characters and intricate, unpredictable plotlines. I’ve also been drawn to animated series like The Last Airbender and The Dragon Prince, which combine compelling character arcs with world-building that feels both magical and easy to follow.
When it comes to video games, I’ve found inspiration in the storytelling of the Final Fantasy series and God of War, among many others. They’ve shaped the way I think about narrative structure and emotional depth. At the heart of it all, though, I simply love a good story, and that’s what drives me to create Grey & White. My goal is to bring readers into a world where the lines between right and wrong are blurred, and every character’s choices carry weight—because that’s the kind of story I’ve always loved, and the kind of story I want to tell.
What's it about?
At its core, Grey & White is a story of magic, rashness, consequences, and redemption, set against the backdrop of a world teetering on the edge of chaos. From the grandeur of cities like Elinton to the far reaches of Dyta, it’s a place where every shadow holds secrets, and magic can be both a gift and a curse.
Our main characters are on journeys that intertwine fate with choice. There’s Tristan, a young man with an unquenchable thirst for vengeance, struggling to control the dark, chaotic power within him. Ella, a healer, has become something far more dangerous as she navigates treacherous waters. And many more characters each with their own stories to tell in this world of hopeful alliances and fateful destinies.
The Magic of Grey & White
Let’s talk about magic! It’s one of my favorite aspects of this world, and the power system in Grey & White reflects a lot about the characters who wield it.
The Grey is wild and fueled by intense emotion—primarily hatred and rage. It’s a dangerous power that brings forth great pain. For Tristan, it’s a tool that both empowers and terrifies him. The Grey is raw, primal, and often leaves a trail of destruction in its wake.
The White, on the other hand, is about love and compassion. It’s the magic of healing and preservation, used to restore rather than destroy. But even the White has its limits, and it’s not always enough to counter the darkness of the Grey.
These magics exist in The Balance. As one ebbs, the other flows.
Themes We'll Explore
Beyond the battles, the magic, and the political intrigue, Grey & White delves deep into themes that I hope will resonate with you.
Redemption: Many of the characters in Grey & White are driven by the desire to atone for past mistakes or reclaim something they’ve lost. Tristan, for example, seeks redemption for a mission that went disastrously wrong—one that haunts him to this day.
Trust: Trust is a rare currency in this world. Alliances are difficult to make in a world where everyone watches out for themselves, and no one can be certain of anyone else’s true loyalties.
Survival and Sacrifice: Sometimes, survival means making impossible choices. Sacrifice is a recurring theme, with characters forced to question what they are willing to give up for the sake of their goals.
Each of these themes is woven into the fabric of the world, giving the characters—and you, the reader—plenty to think about as the story unfolds.
Why did I want to write this?
While I enjoy world-building and crafting magic systems, at the heart of Grey & White are the relationships between the characters. Whether it’s friendships, rivalries, or romance, it’s all about how the characters connect and clash with one another. For me, the emotional core of the story is key—I want you to feel what they feel.
When Tristan hurts, I want you to ache with him. When Ella struggles, I want you to wrestle with those same doubts and challenges. And when Garit is being silly, I hope you’ll laugh along with him. My goal is to create characters who are so vivid and real that their emotions become yours. The relationships they build—or break—are what drive the story, and I hope the way they feel about each other resonates with you as well.
For me, Grey & White isn’t just a story of heroes and villains—it’s a reflection of the choices we make, the power of our emotions, and the weight of consequences. I write because I love exploring those grey areas (pun intended!) where nothing is truly black and white.
What's Next?
I’m just getting started! In future posts, I’ll be diving deeper into the characters that drive Grey & White, exploring the world-building process, and sharing behind-the-scenes insights into how this series came to life. I’ll also be teasing what’s to come in the next installments of the story—trust me, things are only going to get more intense from here.
Be sure to follow along on Bluesky Social so you don’t miss any updates. I’d love to hear your thoughts, so feel free to leave a comment or reach out with any questions or musings about the world of Grey & White.
